Tonttu's Travels

Tonttu's Travels is still being developed in our Game Jam team's spare time. The original build submitted to the game jam featured the first level only and was created in 48 hours during the Global Game Jam 2021. We are aiming for a total of 10 levels and to eventually release on Steam.

My responsibilities in this project include Lead Designer and Level Designer. The game was my brain child and came about as a result of myself pitching the game to others at the Global Game Jam. I have an interest in norse mythology and wanted to make a 3D platformer as I had not experimented with this genre before. I felt the Tonttu myth was a perfect fit for the Lost and Found theme of the Game Jam and allowed us to make a game with interesting source material and mystical aesthetics.

I prototyped the main mechanics of the game, including the player controller and worked closely with programmers to refine the platforming mechanics and game feel. As Level Designer I fully design, whitebox and create each level in engine and work closely with artists to maintain a smooth asset pipeline and workflow. I am in charge of implementation of art assets and mechanics in engine.

Taking part in the Global Game Jam vastly improved my communication skills, tested my ability to perform under tight time constraints and increased my technical knowledge of Unity. It also gave me a greater insight into the design of 3D platformers and boosted my leadership skills as team lead and vision holder.

I have provided an image gallery below to show my level design work.

The first level features a giant library with multiple items for Tonttu to find. I created many jumping puzzles that were informed by the constraints of the player controller. I make frequent use of lighting to guide the player to their objectives. There are also whiteboxed images of the hub level that is still in development. More images will be added here and to the itch.io page as I continue developing the game's levels.
